Program Description:

Overview

Nurse with childThis global mission program enables nursing students to participate in a diverse inter-cultural professional experience in Costa Rica. Through global leadership in health care, BSN students at SIUE gain an appreciation and understanding of service, diversity, and compassion for under-served populations.

Costs

Prices and Payments

$3,400 Approximately

The program fee includes:
  • Air Ticket
  • Lodging
  • Most Meals
  • Ground Transportation
  • La Paz Waterfall excursion
  • Online Spanish Language Tutorial
  • Program miscellaneous expenses
  • Health and Evacuation Insurance
The Program Fee does not include:
  • Meals on travel days
  • Airline luggage fees*
  • Books and Materials
  • Passport
  • SIUE Study Abroad Fee ($75)
  • Personal Expenses
Payment Schedule:
  • $250 deposit payment will be due August 20
  • Payment of $1,575 will be due October 15
  • The balance of $1,575 will be due December 15
Payments are made online through your study abroad application.

* $25 for first checked bag each way.  Students can opt to use a carry-on only (no fee) or to combine with another student and split the costs.

Itinerary

Program Itinerary

 
Day 1 Depart St. Louis for San Jose, Costa Rica, orientation, feed children on the street Infiernillos
Day 2 Church (optional)  La Paz Waterfalls (optional $60 additional cost)
Day 3 Clinic San Tomas, Santo Domingo
Day 4 Health Clinic at Roblealto
Day 5  Tour Children's Cancer Center, Hospital Mexico
Day 6 Clinic Los Guidos
Day 7 Shoes!  The School of Nursing will help children find a new pair of shoes.
Day 8 Return to St. Louis via San Jose Costa Rica
This itinerary is subject to change. Final itinerary information will be provided to participants by the program leader.
 

Program_Expectations

PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL DEMANDS OF THE PROGRAM

Participants must be prepared to encounter cultural and social situations that require a high level of mature independence and respond appropriately to such situations.  Participants must be able successfully navigate transportation systems (air, train, bus, car) to the travel study destination(s) following all rules and laws pertaining to international travel and destinations.  Participants must be able to independently and collectively travel as a coherent group and maintain emotional maturity as warranted by the trip and its variety of educational experiences.  Participants must be prepared to independently walk long distances; carry personal luggage and groceries; walk up and down stairs; and navigate entrances and exits to public transportation, buildings, and cultural sites.   Participants must be prepared to encounter environments different from the United States which can include cigarette/cigar smoke, automobile exhaust, loud noise, congested streets and crowded public areas and a variety of other environments which may not be known except upon encountering them.  If you have any physical or emotional limitations, consider your health and capabilities carefully in consultation with your doctor before undertaking this trip.
